Letter from Cevin - September 2017

Are you ready for fall? It’s hard to believe Labor Day is nearly here, but I have good news.

The first fall publishing party is set to kick off the season in style on September 6 at the TAO Downtown Nightclub to celebrate the PW Star Watch top honorees

Next week’s issue of PW reveals the Top 5 honorees, and we’ll name the “Superstar” at the party itself.

Star Watch is presented by PW and the Frankfurt Book Fair. It was created to identify up-and-coming voices in publishing and expose them to the wider world of publishing. The Superstar receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the Frankfurt Book Fair, including the All-Access Business pass.

Thank you to all the sponsors for making the third annual Star Watch a success.

The party will be a blast, and if you plan to be in New York on September 6th, I personally invite you to attend. Here’s the link for tickets and more information: www.publishersweekly.com/starwatch17

Next up on my horizon, after the fall regional ABA shows, is Frankfurt.

Someone asked me recently what I enjoy about Frankfurt in particular, I realized that seeing old friends is key, but meeting new people in the business is what excites me the most when I travel and attend trade shows.

Listening to people talk about their issues, helping them connect with the industry in new ways—that’s the sweet spot for me.

As you may know, PW publishes the Frankfurt Show Daily as well as the Digital Spotlight, distributed on Day 1 of the show. These two publications offer a great way to highlight what you have to offer at the show and to draw booth traffic.

I’m looking forward to Frankfurt, as always, but also the Miami Book Fair, for which PW will be doing a Miami Spotlight with reach to 100,000 attendees, and the Texas Book Festival. The new PW-directed Texas Spotlight will reach 50,000 attendees.

Later in the season, it’ll be Play Fair here in New York, and Guadalajara for Thanksgiving, but that’s later.

Meantime, don’t forget about the Digital Marketplace I mentioned last month. This is a really good resource for publishers to find digital vendors, and for vendors to promote their services to the publishing industry.

As you read this, I’ll be in California, vacationing in Monterrey and Carmel, hiking and biking along the coast.

Once I’m back, after Labor Day, the most important season in publishing begins. I can’t wait for the Star Watch party and hope to see you there.

I’ll also be calling you about the New York Rights Fair, #NYRF. There’s already a lot of buzz and excitement about this new venture, which is co-sponsored by PW and BolognaFiere. It takes place next May concurrent with BookExpo, targeted to all rights and licensing professionals and covering adult and children’s titles. Let me know if you’d like to discuss this further.

Until then, enjoy the last dog days of summer. I’ll see you soon.

Best wishes,

Cevin Bryerman
